Five people describe running a small independent shop
Imogen Hale, second-hand bookshop
I opened the shop eleven years ago with stock from house clearances and a small loan from the bank, and I would never have survived the first year without my family. My mother still does the accounts every Sunday evening, my brother built all the shelves, and my teenage son covers the till on Saturdays while I go out to buy books. People assume that the pleasure of the job lies in the books themselves, and of course I love them. But what I value most is the regulars: the retired teacher who comes in every Tuesday for detective novels, the boy who has been saving up for a complete set of a fantasy series since he was nine. I know their names, their tastes and, quite often, their life stories. No website can offer that.
