When the old car park behind Maple Street closed, most residents expected it to empty for years. Instead, a group of neighbours decided to turn it into a garden. None of them had much experience, but they were determined to it a go. The first challenge was the ground itself, which was in broken concrete and stones. Volunteers spent every weekend for two months clearing it by hand, and a local building firm to lend them a small digger free of charge. Once fresh soil had been brought in, people began to plant vegetables, herbs and flowers. At first, only a handful of families took , but word soon spread. Today, more than sixty households have their own small bed, and there is a waiting list for new ones. The garden has had some unexpected benefits, too. Neighbours who had lived next door to each other for years without speaking now get well, and older residents pass on tips to younger ones. 'It has the whole street together,' says one of the founders. 'We grow tomatoes, of course, but that's the point. What really matters is the people.'
