Reading Passage

Ellie Barton is fifteen and lives in a flat in the middle of a big city. She has never had a pet because pets aren't allowed in her building. But every Saturday she spends the day with goats, sheep and chickens at Greenway City Farm, ten minutes from her home.

"I first went there on a school trip two years ago," Ellie says. "At the end of the day, the manager told us they needed young volunteers. I said yes straight away. My mum wasn't sure at first, because she thought it would be dirty work. She was right, but I don't care!"

Ellie's day starts at eight o'clock. First she feeds the animals and gives them fresh water. Then she cleans out the goat house, which takes about two hours. "That's the part nobody wants to do," she laughs. "But you get used to the smell."

In the afternoon, the farm is open to visitors, and Ellie's job changes. She shows families around and answers their questions. Many of the children who come have never touched a sheep before. "Some of them are scared, so I show them how to stroke the animals gently," she says.

Ellie doesn't get paid, but she says she has learned a lot. "I want to be a vet when I'm older, and the farm vet lets me watch when she checks the animals. Last month I saw her help a sheep have twin lambs. It was amazing."
