Reading Passage

When Ravi Shah was fourteen, his bike broke on the way to school. The chain came off, and he had no idea how to fix it. He had to walk the rest of the way and was late for his first lesson. "I felt really stupid," he remembers. "So that weekend I asked my grandfather to teach me."

His grandfather had worked in a bike shop for thirty years. In the garage at home, he showed Ravi how to fix chains, change tyres and repair brakes. Ravi watched carefully and wrote everything down in a notebook. Soon his friends started bringing their bikes to him when they had problems.

"One day, six bikes were waiting outside our house," Ravi says. "My mum said there wasn't room for them all, and I had to find somewhere else!" Ravi asked his head teacher if he could use an empty classroom after school. She agreed, and the Bike Doctors club started.

Now about fifteen students come to the club every Thursday. Ravi teaches them how to look after their own bikes. The club is free for students, and people in the town give old bikes they don't need. The students repair them and give them to younger children who haven't got a bike.

Ravi is now sixteen. He would like to open his own bike shop one day, but first he wants to go to college to study business. "My grandfather still comes to the club sometimes," he says. "He tells me I'm a better mechanic than he was at my age."
